Weird Traffic Laws in Surrounding States

October 22, 2020

Now that the holiday season is upon us, more and more people are traveling to visit family and friends. If you are traveling by car, this means you might drive into another state that can have a variety of different traffic laws you might not be aware of. Pugh’s Tire and Service Center, your local Firestone complete autocare center, wants each and every driver to be aware of the surrounding state’s bizarre driving laws in preparation for holiday travel.

Virginia

  • In Waynesboro, it is illegal for a woman to drive a car down Main Street unless her husband is walking in front of it waving a red flag.
  • While driving a motor vehicle in Virginia, you legally must be wearing shoes.
  • In Virginia Beach, Virginia, it is illegal to drive by the same area within 30 minutes of Atlantic Avenue.

Tennessee

  • This isn’t necessarily related to traffic, but the only animal it is legal to shoot out of your car window in Tennessee is a whale. If you do see a whale while in Tennessee, make sure your windshield wipers work to get a good look at it!
  • Driving while asleep in Tennessee is illegal throughout the entire state. If all of your holiday traveling is exhausting, it’s better to pull over for the night, not for safety reasons, but to refrain from receiving a ticket.
  • It is illegal to travel slowly in the left-hand lane of a six-lane divided highway because it impedes the flow of traffic. If your car doesn’t run the best at high speeds, it might be time to bring it into Pugh’s Tire and Service Center, your local Firestone complete autocare center, for a check-up.
  • If the first car in a funeral procession legally crosses an intersection, the rest of the vehicles in the procession can proceed with driving, regardless of right-of-way, and other drivers not in the procession are required to yield.

Georgia

  • In the city of Marietta, spitting out of your car or bus is illegal, and can result in a ticket, but spitting from a truck is fine.
  • Most people assume it unlawful to drive without shoes, but in the state of Georgia, it is perfectly lawful to drive without footwear.
  • Drivers are lawfully forbidden from driving with headphones in. We hope all of your passengers have the same taste in music.
  • If you ever see a man in a suit swerving through traffic, don’t be alarmed. It might just be a member of the Georgia Assembly. Politicians who are members of the State Assembly can not receive a speeding ticket while the assembly is in session. Be sure that your brakes are tuned-up before driving through Georgia, in case a politician cuts you off!

South Carolina

  • If you like to express yourself through bumper stickers, be wary when driving through South Carolina. “Naughty” bumper stickers containing obscene or indecent words, photographs, or depictions can result in a fine up to $200.
  • While driving during the day, don’t be alarmed if you see farmers taking their pigs for a spin. The only time that cattle and swine can be hauled is during daylight hours.
  • When slowing down to make a turn, do you pay attention to which action (flipping on the turn signal or slowing down) is done first? In South Carolina, drivers must initiate their turn signal 100 ft. before making your turn. To make sure your blinkers and other electrical components are in tip-top shape before holiday traveling, bring it into Pugh’s Tire and Service Center, your local Firestone complete autocare center for all of your maintenance needs.
